Skills Council of Canada and Mohawk College City School Launch Strategic Partnership to Advance Skills Development

Ottawa, ON, August 20, 2024 – Skills Council of Canada (SCC) and Mohawk College are proud to announce a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing skills development and providing robust training opportunities for underserved and vulnerable communities. This collaboration will leverage the expertise and resources of both organizations to deliver high-quality education and training programs through City School by Mohawk.

Innovative Training Programs to Address Skills Gaps

The partnership will focus on developing and delivering a series of training programs specifically designed to address skills gaps in the construction sector. These programs will integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, ensuring that participants gain practical skills alongside academic understanding. Conducted at various locations, including mobile classrooms and the Trades Lab at the Eva Rothwell Centre in Hamilton, the training will involve five cohorts, each offering 60-80 hours of instruction and hands-on learning opportunities.

The comprehensive curriculum will cover essential skills such as situational awareness, health and safety, use of personal protective equipment, measurement techniques, tool selection and use, and effective communication. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Mohawk College, with their achievements documented on their transcripts, thus recognizing their efforts and preparing them for future opportunities in the construction sector.

"This partnership with Skills Council of Canada will extend City School’s ability to deliver impactful training and education to even more people in our community," said Jake Ohanian, Mohawk College Manager of Strategic Partnerships. “We look forward to working together to provide participants with the opportunity to continue their educational journey and secure meaningful work in high-demand fields.”

Addressing Labour Shortages and Stimulating Economic Growth

This partnership aims to tackle the labour shortage and stimulate growth in key sectors of Ontario’s economy. By equipping participants with in-demand skills, the programs will contribute to increasing Ontario's long-term economic competitive advantage by creating a sustainable and resilient workforce. These efforts will not only meet the immediate needs of employers but also ensure a steady pipeline of skilled workers who can adapt to evolving industry demands, thereby supporting economic stability and growth.

Supporting Individuals Facing Barriers to Employment

A key focus of the partnership is to support individuals facing barriers to employment, including those with prior involvement in the criminal justice system, racialized persons and Indigenous peoples, and those with disabilities. By providing tailored training and support, SCC and Mohawk College aim to create inclusive opportunities that enable these individuals to succeed in the workforce. The program will focus on removing barriers to access, offering resources and mentorship to help participants overcome challenges and achieve their career goals.

"We are thrilled to partner with Mohawk College's City School to bring these vital training programs to life. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to support skill development and provide opportunities for those who need it most," said Kate O’Neil, Vice President of Partnerships at Skills Council of Canada.

    Commitment to Community Impact

Both SCC and Mohawk College are committed to creating inclusive and equitable learning environments. This partnership will also include social impact projects, such as the construction of community sheds, further integrating learning with community development. By engaging participants in projects that benefit their local communities, the programs foster a sense of civic responsibility and provide practical experience in real-world settings. These community sheds will serve as multifunctional spaces, supporting local activities and needs, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of skilled trades training. This approach not only enhances the learning experience but also strengthens community ties, promotes social cohesion, and illustrates the direct impact of education on local development.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in addressing the skills gap in Ontario's construction sector and supporting the professional development of underserved communities. We invite you to join us in celebrating this milestone and supporting our efforts to build a brighter future for all.
