Tackling Global Challenges for Clean Water and Sanitation: The Crucial Role of SDG6

The Necessity of SDG6: Ensuring Clean Water and Sanitation in the Face of Global Challenges

As a representative of the Skills Council of Canada, it is my pleasure to share with you the urgency of addressing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. This goal is vital on both local and global scales because water scarcity, poor water quality, and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices, and educational opportunities for poor families across the world. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing demand for disposable face masks, our environment and access to clean water face significant challenges. It is crucial for both the public and private sectors to unite in order to support and achieve SDG6.

The importance of SDG6 cannot be understated – it fosters better health and environmental conditions, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. However, current environmental threats, such as pollution from the disposal of single-use masks during the COVID-19 era, put this goal at risk. As part of our work with Arctic Freshwater, we focus on finding dynamic solutions that will not only address these threats but also raise awareness of SDG6's critical role within our communities.

To better understand the urgency of SDG6, let's take a closer look at the goals and targets as defined by the United Nations' SDGs action plan for SDG6:

    • Clean and accessible water for all by 2030
    • Improved sanitation facility access and hygiene for all
    • Increased water-use efficiency and sustainable withdrawal of freshwater
    • Protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems

Arctic Freshwater's ecosystem plays a pivotal role in supporting SDG6. They have the infrastructure, access to 178 trillion litres of renewable pure water sources, and educational resources needed to be the foundation of local and global solutions. By partnering with the Skills Council of Canada and other organizations committed to sustainable development, Arctic Freshwater can be part of the effort to address the global challenges facing our water resources.

Ensuring the success of SDG6 will require collaborative action across public, private, and social sectors. If your organization is interested in supporting or collaborating with Arctic Freshwater and the Skills Council of Canada, we invite you to visit our websites at www.arcticfreshwater.world and www.skillscouncil.ca, send us an email at info@skillscouncil.ca, or start a chat here.
